Postural & Desk Pain: North Beach Physio
Hours at a screen create predictable patterns of dysfunction, and predictable patterns of pain. We correct the mechanics, address the strength deficits, and give you the workstation set-up that stops it returning.
Sitting at a desk for eight or more hours a day, day after day, year after year, creates very predictable patterns in the body. Tight chest muscles. Weak deep neck stabilisers. Stiff thoracic spine. Compressed lower back. Tight hip flexors. The pain that results (neck, shoulders, headaches, lower back) isn't random. It's the consequence of asking your body to hold one position for far longer than it's designed to. The good news: it's also very treatable.
Common Desk-Related Pain Patterns
Upper Crossed Syndrome
Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, hunched upper back. Causes neck pain, upper back tension, headaches, and shoulder impingement over time.
Lower Crossed Syndrome
Anterior pelvic tilt, tight hip flexors, weak glutes, weak abdominals. Causes lower back pain and reduced hip mobility.
Tension Headaches
Built up tension through the upper trapezius, levator scapulae and suboccipital muscles refers up into the head, often felt as band-like pressure around the temples or at the base of the skull.
Wrist, Elbow & Forearm Pain
Repetitive mouse and keyboard use can drive overuse conditions like tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and carpal tunnel symptoms.
How We Treat Postural & Desk Pain
Assessment. We assess your posture, identify which muscles are tight and which are weak, and check the joints that have become stiff from prolonged sitting (typically the thoracic spine and hips).
Hands-on treatment. Manual therapy and dry needling to release tension and restore joint mobility, particularly through the thoracic spine, where most desk workers are stiff.
Targeted strengthening. Deep neck stabilisers. Mid and lower trapezius. Glutes. Deep core. The muscles your body needs to maintain better posture without you having to think about it.
Ergonomic correction. We can assess your workstation set-up and give you specific, practical changes (monitor height, chair height, mouse position, screen distance, keyboard angle) to remove the daily aggravators driving your symptoms.
Movement habits. Standing up regularly is more important than the perfect chair. We give you a realistic movement strategy that fits into your work day.
Workplace Ergonomic Assessments
We offer on-site or virtual workplace ergonomic assessments, assessing your desk, chair, monitor, keyboard and habits to identify what's contributing to your pain and giving you a practical action plan. Ideal for individuals or as a workplace wellness initiative.
